One of the most important intermediates in this process is 5,6-dihydroxyindole. This substance is naturally occurring in the body, making it non-toxic, with few side effects, and avoiding the carcinogenic, teratogenic, and allergenic effects of hair dyes made from p-phenylenediamine and its derivatives. 5,6-Dihydroxyindole has a small molecular weight and, as a permanent hair dye, operates on the same mechanism as other dyes: it penetrates the hair shaft and undergoes oxidative polymerization to form a colored macromolecule that is then fixed in place. Currently, it is being used in some personal care products to replace aniline and phenolic compounds.
