NAD+ 

What is NAD+?   

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) is a coenzyme compound composed of nicotinamide, ribose, phosphate, and adenosine monophosphate (AMP). It primarily acts as a coenzyme for dehydrogenases in redox reactions. In its molecule, the nicotinamide nitrogen undergoes a reversible electron-accepting oxidation state change (from 5 to 3 valences), and the para-carbon atom can undergo single-hydrogen reduction.


NAD+ acts as a carrier of hydrogen atoms and electrons in biological oxidation processes, accepting 2H+ (2H+ + 2e+) removed from metabolites and transferring it to flavoproteins. As the initiating coenzyme of the NADH oxidative respiratory chain, NAD+ acts as a hydrogen carrier in oxidative phosphorylation and plays a crucial role in cytoplasmic-mitochondrial shuttle mechanisms such as α-glycerophosphate shuttle and malate-aspartate shuttle.
