Gymnema Sylvestre is a vine belonging to the genus *Gymnema* in the family Asclepiadaceae. It can grow up to 4 meters long. The stem bark is grayish-brown with lenticels, and young branches are covered with fine hairs. Leaves are opposite, obovate or ovate-oblong, 3-8.5 cm long, with petioles covered in short soft hairs and bearing clusters of glands at the apex. The cymes are axillary, with bell-shaped yellow corollas. The follicles are horn-shaped, 5-9 cm long, and the seeds have white silky hairs. Flowering occurs from May to September, and fruiting from October to January of the following year.
This plant is distributed in Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, Zhejiang, Taiwan, and Yunnan provinces of China, as well as India and Vietnam, where it is commonly found in mountain forests or thickets.
1. Its roots, tender branches, and leaves contain triterpenoid saponins, oleanolic acid derivatives, and other components, which have the effects of clearing heat and cooling blood, reducing swelling and detoxifying. They are mainly used to treat carbuncles, abscesses, and rheumatic pain.
2. The leaf extract can inhibit sweet taste reactions, promote liver glycogen synthesis, and regulate glucose metabolism.
