What is 1-Hexadecanol?   

Cetyl alcohol is an organic compound with the molecular formula C16H34O. It is used as a solvent or in the production of surfactants, and is widely used in daily chemicals, personal care, fabric washing, fabric softening, corrosion resistance, printing and dyeing auxiliaries, foaming agents, and other industries. It has some water absorption; when mixed with oily bases (such as petrolatum) as an emulsion matrix, its water absorption increases. Upon contact with water or aqueous liquids, it absorbs water under thorough stirring to form a W/O type emulsion matrix. In the oil phase of an O/W type emulsion matrix, it acts as a stabilizer and thickener.


Industrial products are mixtures of several isomers. Its freezing point is less than -60℃. It is used as a softener and emulsion regulator in cosmetics, and as a co-emulsifier and hardener in pharmaceuticals. It is prepared by reduction of hexadecanoyl chloride with sodium borohydride or by reduction of methyl thiopalmitate with Rexroth nickel.

Feature
