Atractylodes macrocephala is a perennial herb belonging to the genus Atractylodes in the Asteraceae family and holds an important place in traditional Chinese medicine. The rhizome of Atractylodes macrocephala, after being dried and ground, is a major ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine.
The underground root of Atractylodes macrocephala is thick and grayish-yellow. The leaves are concentrated in the lower part of the stem, 3-5 pinnately compound, papery, green, with fine spines along the edges. The inflorescence is a capitate, solitary at the stem apex, with imbricate bracts and purplish-red florets. The fruit is obconical, densely covered with white hairs, and has a feathery pappus. Flowering and fruiting occur from August to October.
