Clove Oil

What is Clove Oil ?

Clove, also known as clove bud, belongs to the genus *Clove* in the family Myrtaceae and is an evergreen tree. Clove bud oil is obtained by steam distillation of the flower buds, with a yield of 15%–18%. Clove bud oil is a yellow to clear brown, free-flowing liquid, sometimes slightly viscous; it has a characteristic aroma of medicinal, woody, spicy, and eugenol notes, with a relative density of 1.044–1.057 and a refractive index of 1.528–1.538. Clove stem oil is obtained by steam distillation of the clove stem, with a yield of 4%–6%.

Clove stem oil is a yellow to light brown liquid, turning dark purplish-brown upon contact with iron; it has a characteristic spicy and eugenol aroma, but less pronounced than that of the flower bud oil, with a relative density of 1.041–1.059 and a refractive index of 1.531–1.536. Clove leaf oil can be obtained by steam distillation of the leaves, with a yield of about 2%. Clove leaf oil is a yellow to light brown liquid that darkens upon contact with iron. It has a characteristic spicy and eugenol aroma, a relative density of 1.039–1.051, and a refractive index of 1.531–1.535.

Feature

Powerful Analgesic Effect

This is clove oil's most well-known use, especially in dentistry. Its core component, eugenol, can temporarily numb nerve endings, acting like a natural local anesthetic to quickly relieve toothache.

Antibacterial, Antiviral, and Antifungal Effects

Clove oil has broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, significantly inhibiting various oral bacteria (such as Streptococcus mutans, which causes tooth decay), fungi (such as Candida albicans), and viruses.

Antioxidant and Anti-inflammatory Effects

Eugenol and other phenolic compounds it contains are powerful antioxidants that help the body fight free radical damage. It inhibits the production of inflammatory mediators, thereby helping to reduce redness and inflammation in tissues.

Insect Repellent and Preservative Effects

Its strong aroma effectively repels insects and is a common ingredient in natural insect repellents. As a natural preservative, it inhibits the growth of bacteria and mold, extending product shelf life.

Applications

Oral Care & Dentistry

For temporary toothache relief, apply a very small amount of clove oil to the painful gums or cavity with a cotton swab. It is a key ingredient in many toothpastes and mouthwashes, used to prevent cavities, gingivitis, and freshen breath.

Medicine & Healthcare

In traditional medicine, it is used to relieve bloating, stomach cramps, and nausea. Diluted cloves can be used to treat acne, fungal infections (such as athlete's foot), warts, and infected wounds.

Food & Flavoring

It is an important flavoring agent in the food industry, used in meat baking, marinades, sauces, and beverages (such as Indian milk tea). It is used to extend the shelf life of food products.

Cosmetics & Fragrances

Used in perfumes, soaps, and skincare products to provide warm, spicy oriental notes and to utilize its antibacterial and antioxidant properties.

Household & Insect Repellent

As a natural ingredient, it is added to mosquito repellents and insect sprays. Used in homemade cleaners to purify surfaces and air.
