What is Aucklandiae Radix Extract?

   Costus root extract typically refers to the concentrated extract of the dried root of *Aucklandia lappa* Decne. (also known as Yunnan costus root or Guang costus root), a plant in the Asteraceae family. It is a brownish-yellow powder, mainly containing sesquiterpene lactones such as costunolide, dehydrocostunolide, and costunene lactone.


Source: Not star anise (often mistakenly called "costus root"), but the root of plants in the *Aucklandia* genus of the Asteraceae family, mainly produced in Yunnan and Sichuan provinces; note the distinction from *Dolomiaea spp.* or *Inula spp.*.

Preparation: Usually extracted by reflux with water or ethanol, concentrated, and spray-dried (common ratios include 5:1, 10:1, and 20:1).

Properties: Brownish-yellow powder with a characteristic aromatic odor and a taste that is initially sweet followed by bitterness; the standard extract should be analyzed by TLC/HPLC.

Application

Promotes Digestive System Function: Costus root extract stimulates gastric juice secretion and accelerates intestinal peristalsis through its volatile oil components, relieving functional dyspepsia, bloating, and constipation.


Anti-inflammatory and Antibacterial Properties: Lactone compounds in costus root can inhibit the release of inflammatory factors (such as TNF-α and IL-6), reducing intestinal or respiratory inflammation; it also has significant inhibitory effects on common pathogenic bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.


Regulates Immune Function: Experiments show that costus root extract can enhance the activity of immune cells and improve the body's disease resistance, but the specific mechanism still requires further investigation.
