Matrine

What is Matrine?   

Matrine is extracted from the dried roots, plants, and fruits of the leguminous plant Sophora flavescens Ait using organic solvents such as ethanol. It is an alkaloid, generally total matrine, whose main components include matrine, sophoracarpine, oxysophocarpine, and sophoridine, with matrine and oxymatrine being the highest. Other sources include Sophora subprostrata (shandougen) and the aerial parts of Sophora alopecuroides.
