Bergamot oil comes from the peel of a bitter orange tree, originally from India, and later produced in China and Italy. Its efficacy varies depending on the variety grown in its region, resulting in some differences in taste and composition. In traditional Chinese medicine texts, it has long been listed as a medicine for respiratory diseases. According to the *Compendium of Materia Medica*, bergamot is slightly bitter, sour, and warm in nature, entering the liver, spleen, stomach, and lung meridians. It has the effects of soothing the liver and regulating qi, drying dampness and resolving phlegm, and can be used for liver and stomach qi stagnation, and chest and rib distension.
The earliest use of bergamot in aromatherapy was for its antibacterial effects, comparable to lavender. It can combat indoor dust mites and is therefore often used to relieve allergic rhinitis and childhood asthma. Diffusing it indoors not only creates a relaxing and pleasant atmosphere but also purifies the air and prevents the spread of viruses. When used in skin massage, it is very helpful for oily skin with acne, helping to balance the secretion of sebaceous glands in oily skin.
