What is Cytisine?

Cyperine is a naturally occurring quinolone alkaloid, primarily extracted from the legume *Cyperus difformis*, but also found in other plants such as chickpeas. Cyperine is an organic compound with some toxicity. It is also used in the production of smoking cessation medications, emergency medicines, and cough suppressants.

Cypermine strongly stimulates the chemoreceptors in the carotid body, reflexively exciting the respiratory center.

Pressor Effect

By stimulating sympathetic ganglia and promoting the release of adrenaline from the adrenal medulla, it leads to vasoconstriction, increased heart rate, and elevated blood pressure.

Neuromuscular Toxicity

Similar to nicotine, it also stimulates N-cholinergic receptors.

As an Active Ingredient in Smoking Cessation Therapy

Cypermine's molecular structure is similar to nicotine, allowing it to competitively bind to the same receptors in the brain. It can both alleviate nicotine withdrawal symptoms and block the pleasurable sensations associated with nicotine.
