Cyperine is a naturally occurring quinolone alkaloid, primarily extracted from the legume *Cyperus difformis*, but also found in other plants such as chickpeas. Cyperine is an organic compound with some toxicity. It is also used in the production of smoking cessation medications, emergency medicines, and cough suppressants.

Cypermine strongly stimulates the chemoreceptors in the carotid body, reflexively exciting the respiratory center.
