Black sesame, also known as sesame, giant sesame, and oil sesame, is the black seed of the sesame plant (Sesame genus) in the family Sesamumceae. It is an annual herbaceous plant with a quadrangular stem; opposite leaves, or alternate leaves in the upper part; leaf blades are ovate, oblong, or lanceolate; flowers are solitary, with a tubular corolla, white with a purple or yellow tinge; the capsule is elliptical, mostly quadrangular, hexagonal, or octagonal; seeds are numerous, ovate, with a black seed coat. Flowering occurs from May to September, and fruiting from July to September.
Black sesame is mainly distributed in India, Sudan, Myanmar, and China; in China, it is cultivated throughout the country except for the Tibetan Plateau. Black sesame prefers warm temperatures, is somewhat drought-tolerant, but has poor waterlogging tolerance. It is best planted in higher elevations with loose, well-drained soil and a pH of 6-7.5. Black sesame is propagated by seed.

Long-term, moderate consumption may alleviate dry and brittle hair to some extent, but it needs to be combined with overall nutritional intake.

Bone Health: The calcium content of black sesame seeds (approximately 780mg/100g) far exceeds that of milk (approximately 120mg/100ml). Combined with a small amount of phosphorus, it can promote bone density maintenance to some extent, making it particularly suitable as a calcium supplement for those with lactose intolerance.
