Arachidonic Acid 

What is Arachidonic Acid ?   

Arachidonic acid (ARA), also known as all-cis-5,8,11,14-eicosatetraenoic acid (C20H32O2), is an ω-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid. It containing four cis double bonds, and is abundant in phospholipids of biological tissues. It must be stored in a cool, dark place at -20°C.


As a direct precursor to eicosate derivatives, its metabolites can regulate lipid metabolism, vascular elasticity, and platelet function. Animals cannot synthesize it autonomously and must obtain it through dietary linoleic acid or direct supplementation. This substance is a component of cell membranes, participates in the synthesis of prostaglandins and leukotrienes, and generates spasmodic mediators in immune responses via cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways. Sufficient dietary arachidonic acid can reduce the consumption of essential amino acids and has a protective effect against radiation damage to the skin.
