Hawthorn (scientific name: *Crataegus pinnatifida* Bunge) is a plant belonging to the genus *Crataegus* in the family Rosaceae. It is also known as mountain hawthorn, red fruit, and green pear. It is a deciduous tree. Its bark is rough, dark gray or grayish-brown; twigs are cylindrical, with current-year branches being purplish-brown; leaves are broadly ovate or triangular-ovate, stipules are herbaceous, falcate, and serrated; the inflorescence is a corymbose cyme with many flowers, bracts are membranous, linear-lanceolate; calyx tube is campanulate; sepals are triangular-ovate to lanceolate; petals are obovate or nearly orbicular; the fruit is nearly spherical or pear-shaped, deep red, with light-colored spots.
Hawthorn is found in Northeast, North, and Northwest China, mainly distributed in eastern Eurasia, and also in Mongolia, South Korea, North Korea, and Russia. It is distributed throughout most of China. It is a sun-loving species, preferring full sun but also tolerating shade, and thrives in cool, humid environments. It is cold-hardy and drought-tolerant, but intolerant of waterlogging. It is not particular about soil type, but prefers cool, dry climates and well-drained soil. It has strong adaptability and often grows on hillsides, forest edges, or in thickets. Flowering occurs from May to June, and fruiting from September to October.
